Baros · 1993I first travelled to The Maldives for my honeymoon in 1993, to the island of Baros in the Malé Atoll. It was a very different world back then — salt showers, sand floors, and food that was occasionally… adventurous. How things have changed. Today The Maldives is recognised globally as the pinnacle of luxury travel.
It’s uncomfortable for me as an Englishman to say this, but since that first trip my wife and I have been extraordinarily fortunate to return many times, to many different resorts across every atoll and every category — from entry-level overwater to the most exclusive private islands on earth. That good fortune came from the surprising success of several businesses I built over the years, and I’m deeply grateful for every trip.
Along the way we’ve made genuine friendships — with guests, with staff, and with some of the people who run these remarkable places. The Maldivian people are extraordinarily warm, proud and hospitable, and that is as much a part of the magic as the ocean itself.
We do have two firm favourites. Kudadoo Private Island and Hurawalhi, both part of the wonderful Crown & Champa Resorts Group. I’ll save the reasons for another time — but if you want my honest opinion, you won’t do better.
There is however one problem I keep coming back to. There are now over 200 resorts in The Maldives, each with a genuinely unique offering. For most people this is a once-in-a-lifetime trip — often tied to a once-in-a-lifetime moment. A honeymoon. A significant birthday. An anniversary long overdue. The average spend for a couple for one week is upwards of $15,000. And yet choosing which island to actually book remains genuinely difficult, confusing, and — once the payment is made — completely irreversible.
That problem is exactly why I built The Maldives Concierge.
We have manually researched and catalogued every single resort island in The Maldives — all 200+ of them — recording over 50 individual attributes for each one. Transfer method and time. Price bracket. House reef quality. Number of restaurants. Island size. Kids club. Spa. And much more. We then use cutting-edge AI to match your specific requirements to your perfect resort — presenting you with three personally tailored recommendations. It’s completely free, it takes minutes, and nothing else like it exists.
We’ve also put together a concise, practical travel guide and comprehensive, his and hers, packing list you can download to your phone before you travel — covering the things we wish someone had told us on our earlier trips. Small mistakes are easy to make in The Maldives. We’d like to help you avoid them.
Enjoy every single moment.
Kind regards,
Mark
