Seaplane vs Speedboat —
Which Transfer is Right for You?

Your transfer to the resort is not just logistics — it is the opening chapter of your Maldives story. The method you choose will shape your first impression of the archipelago, your budget, and in many cases, which resorts are even available to you.

The moment the seaplane lifts off the water at Malé and banks over the Indian Ocean, revealing hundreds of coral atolls stretching to the horizon like scattered emeralds, is one of the most breathtaking travel experiences on earth. I have done it multiple times and it never loses its power.

But a seaplane transfer is not right for everyone — and a speedboat transfer is far from second best. Understanding the difference will help you make the right choice for your trip.

The Two Main Transfer Types

Seaplane Transfer

Twin Otter seaplanes operated primarily by Trans Maldivian Airways connect Malé’s seaplane terminal to resorts across the atolls. Flights last between 20 and 45 minutes. Seaplanes operate during daylight hours only — typically between 6am and 6pm — which has critical implications for late-arriving international flights.

Speedboat Transfer

Resorts within approximately 30km of Malé offer speedboat transfers. Journey times range from 20 minutes to 90 minutes. Speedboats operate day and night, making them the only option for late evening arrivals. Some resorts combine a domestic flight with a speedboat for more remote locations.

The Luggage Issue Nobody Warns You About

This is the most common practical problem guests encounter with seaplane transfers. The luggage limit on a Twin Otter seaplane is strictly enforced — typically 20kg total per person including hand luggage. On some routes it is as low as 15kg.

This is not a guideline. Excess baggage will either be left behind to follow on a later flight, or you will pay significant excess charges at the terminal. If you travel with dive equipment, photography gear, or simply like options, plan carefully well in advance.

The Late Flight Problem

Many flights from the UK, Europe, and Australia arrive at Malé in the late evening — often between 9pm and midnight. This makes seaplane transfers impossible and requires either an overnight stay in Malé or a speedboat transfer to a nearby resort.

If your resort requires a seaplane and you arrive late, you will need to book one night in a Malé hotel — the Hulhulé Island Hotel adjacent to the airport is the standard choice — and take your seaplane the following morning. Budget for this when calculating the true cost of your trip.

The Concierge Verdict

Choose Seaplane If…

The aerial view is on your bucket list, you are travelling to a remote atoll resort, you arrive in daylight, and you can pack within the weight limits. The experience is genuinely extraordinary and worth the cost and complexity.

The Concierge Verdict

Choose Speedboat If…

You arrive late at night, travel with heavy luggage or dive equipment, are prone to motion sickness in aircraft, or are working to a tighter budget. Many of the finest resorts in the Maldives are accessible by speedboat — proximity to Malé does not mean inferior quality.

My Personal Recommendation

If budget allows and your flight arrives in daylight, take the seaplane at least once. The experience of arriving at your resort by seaplane — touching down on the lagoon, stepping directly onto the jetty — is one of the great travel arrivals in the world. But do not let the romance of the seaplane drive you to the wrong resort.
