Best Maldives Resorts for
Families with Young Children
Choosing a Maldives resort with young children is one of the most consequential holiday decisions you will ever make. Too remote and the transfer becomes an ordeal. No shallow lagoon and they cannot safely swim. No kids club and you never truly relax. Get it right and a Maldives family holiday is the most extraordinary experience a child can have.
I have been visiting the Maldives since my honeymoon in 1993 and have returned many times since — across every atoll, every price category, and every type of resort. My wife and I first took our two beautiful boys when they were 3 and 6. We last took them in 2024 — by which point they’d reached 22 and 26 years old, and 6’2″ and 6’5″, thank god for the all-you-can-eat buffets! Over the years I have spoken with hundreds of fellow guests, many of them families navigating exactly this decision. The resorts below represent my honest, independent assessment of where families with young children will genuinely thrive.
This is not a commission-driven list. No resort has paid to appear here. These recommendations are based entirely on personal experience, research, and the feedback of guests who have stayed at each property.
What to Look For
Lagoon depth and safety — Young children need calm, shallow water they can stand in and explore safely. The best family resorts have a protected lagoon with a gradual sandy shelf rather than a deep drop-off directly from the beach. Always check the lagoon conditions before booking — some of the most beautiful resorts have lagoons entirely unsuitable for young children.
Kids club quality — A genuinely well-run kids club with qualified, enthusiastic staff transforms a family holiday. Look for age-appropriate programming, marine education activities, and flexible hours that allow parents to enjoy dinner together in the evening. The difference between a token kids corner and a world-class children’s facility is enormous.
Transfer method — A seaplane transfer with young children, particularly those under five, can be stressful and occasionally frightening. Speedboat transfers are generally more family-friendly. If a seaplane is unavoidable, choose a resort where the flight time is under 30 minutes.
Family villa configuration — An overwater villa is absolutely not suitable for guests with young children for obvious reasons and they are primarily designed for couples. Look for resorts offering dedicated family beach villas with fold away beds/cots or interconnecting rooms, generous outdoor space, and childproofing options.
Private Villa Pools/Sun Strength — I know you are a great parent, so please just indulge me with this. Having a private villa pool is great with children for obvious reasons — endless hours of splashing, cooling off in the Maldivian heat, and keeping them happily contained while you actually finish a drink. However they also represent a real danger for younger children and there are no real laws in the Maldives like the excellent French “Loi sur la sécurité des piscines”. So please be vigilant at all times or, if you plan to really relax consider booking a villa without a private pool and use the resort communal pool where you will always be on your guard. The sun is also exceptionally strong this close to the equator. If you’re used to European or even Floridian holidays with young children, please be aware you are in a different league entirely — apply sunscreen far more liberally and cover them up more than you think necessary. Lecture over.
“The difference between a mediocre kids club and a world-class one is the difference between a holiday and a genuinely life-changing family experience.”
The Best Resorts for Families with Young Children
Kandima Maldives
Dhaalu AtollKandima is arguably the finest family resort in the Maldives. Spread across a long natural island with one of the most beautiful lagoons in the archipelago, it offers an extraordinary range of activities for children of every age. The Kula kids club is genuinely world-class — with dedicated spaces for different age groups, a full programme of daily activities including marine biology sessions, cooking classes, and water sports. The lagoon is shallow, calm, and perfectly safe for young children. Family studios and family sky pool aqua villas offer generous space for travelling families. The resort has a relaxed, energetic atmosphere that suits families perfectly without feeling like a theme park.
Atmosphere Kanifushi
Lhaviyani AtollAtmosphere Kanifushi offers one of the best value family propositions in the Maldives. The ultra all inclusive package — which genuinely includes almost everything — removes the anxiety of a mounting bill that can make family holidays stressful. The resort sits on a stunning natural island with a superb house reef and a calm lagoon ideal for children. The kids club is well-run and children are genuinely welcomed throughout the resort rather than tolerated. The speedboat transfer from Malé takes approximately 90 minutes but the journey itself is an adventure for young children. For families seeking genuine quality without ultra-luxury pricing, Kanifushi is exceptional value.
Sun Siyam Iru Fushi
Noonu AtollIru Fushi is one of the largest resort islands in the Maldives, and its size works enormously in favour of families. The island has multiple beaches, each with different character, and the lagoon conditions vary around the island allowing families to find the calmest, shallowest water for young children. The kids club — Kiddies Cove — is excellent, and the resort’s all inclusive offering covers most activities and dining. The seaplane transfer is one of the few compromises for families with very young children, but the 30 minute flight is manageable and the aerial views of the atolls are genuinely magical for older children.
Amari Havodda
Gaafu Dhaalu AtollAmari Havodda sits in the far south of the Maldives in an atoll that sees dramatically less tourist traffic than the northern resorts — and the marine life reflects this. The house reef is outstanding and the lagoon conditions are ideal for families. The resort has a relaxed, unfussy atmosphere that suits families with young children perfectly, and the kids club is well staffed and genuinely engaging. The transfer involves a domestic flight to Kaadedhdhoo followed by a speedboat — slightly more complex than a direct speedboat from Malé, but entirely manageable and the domestic flight adds an element of adventure.
Oblu Select Lobigili
North Malé AtollLobigili’s proximity to Malé — just 20 minutes by speedboat — makes it one of the most accessible family resorts in the Maldives, and its all inclusive offering covers a genuine range of activities and dining options. The resort is adults-only during certain periods so always check availability for family travel dates, but when open to families it offers a polished, well-managed experience. The lagoon is calm and the resort’s compact size means children are never far from the water or the facilities. For families travelling for the first time to the Maldives who want the reassurance of proximity to the capital, Lobigili is an excellent choice.
Honest Caveats
Several of the most celebrated ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives are not well suited to families with young children. Kudadoo Private Island, while extraordinary in every other respect, is designed as an adults retreat and the intimate atmosphere is not enhanced by the presence of young children — nor is the experience right for families. Similarly, Soneva Jani and Gili Lankanfushi, while both exceptional resorts, have lagoon conditions and villa configurations that work better for couples than for families with children under five.
This is not a criticism of these resorts — they are among the finest in the world. It is simply an honest acknowledgement that the best resort for a couple is rarely the best resort for a family, and making this distinction before you book is the most important decision you will make.
